Pedaling away for an Orange!

Last Sunday I went cycling. And I did lots of it. I have not cycled, as much as i did on that day, ever before. It was one life affirming moment :)

I have always been fascinated by this ingenious and remarkable mode of transport which enables mobility. I think I got my first cycle when I was in class 3. It was a blue powell, if my memory is correct. It had side wheels initially until I learnt to balance and ride on my own. And I loved it! It was my first brush with choosing my own direction. I would turn the handle and the cycle would obey, taking me where ever I chose to go. I want to take a left and left we go, right and right it is. I want to stop because I think I just caught a glimpse of the biggest snail ever, whilst riding ..And STOP we did to check it out. And so, my cycle symbolized for me the greatest epitome of independent thought. I left behind the safeness of my home and directed my handle to move where I chose to go. And that too, with my own efforts.

And I went...

The experience was just incredible. And that's what I felt while riding with a bunch of friends from university to the Bannerghatta national Park, here in bangalore. The ride was great fun except that I wish the vehicles and the smoke that they emanate would just vanish from the streets.
We cycled, stopped by small shops to eat, drank nariyal paani, put one of our friends in a rickshaw back to hostel when she unfortunately got a cramp in her leg while riding and ended our morning adventure with a funny story of oranges falling from heaven to feed us!

Aaah.. What a Sunday morning!

  2. Nicely written Liji. Peddling for an orange was such a memorable experience. Birthday cake, swinging him and his innocent way of telling 'Yaha Gira de yaar' was so much fun.

  3. Divine oranges. We must never forget. Other people have prophets and texts, we have citrus fruit, :D.
